HISTORTY OF PORT

Port and Kłodnica Canal

Upon Fryderyk Wilhelm II initiative, constructing the Kłodnica Canal had been started in 1792, which connected Gliwice with Odra river. In 1806, the first barge loaded with iron castings sailed to Wrocław. The Canal, along section Gliwice-Kędzierzyn-Koźle, was 45,7km long in total and it had 18 locks. Its width was 12m and depth 1,6m. Barges overcame gradients of 48m. Gliwice Port was located in the centre of the town between Wilhelm and Bahnhofstrasse (currently Zwycięstwa and Dworcowa Streets). The channel served for transportation of: coal, iron and zinc ores as well as steel products. In 1897, the narrow-gauge railway line was connected with the port. In 1936, the Kłodnica Canal together with Gliwice port had completed operation.

Port and Gliwice Canal

In May 1934, construction of new channel together with port was started, which was supposed to become a modern water way meeting requirements of market-conditions of the thirties in XX century. Works were continued until 1940. After their completion, Gliwice Canal was the most modern artificial waterway in Europe. The difference in altitudes between Gliwice and Kędzierzyn-Koźle, which is 44m can be overcome thanks to 6 double chamber locks. Canal length is 44km. According to international classification, it is deemed as the III class waterway.
