More than 200,000 tons of coal flowed from Gliwice to Wroclaw

Almost 207,000 tons of coal flowed this year along the Gliwice Canal and the Odra from the Gliwice Inland Port to the Wroclaw heat plant. This year, a total of 63 percent more coal was transported by water than in the previous season.

In the completed season (2018) a total of 421 barges with coal flowed from Gliwice to Wroclaw according to the information of the PPA received from the Director of Silesian Logistics Centre Robert Goc.

This year, the total amount of  raw material delivered to the Wroclaw heat plant by the Gliwice Canal and Odra amounted to 206,808 tons. The cargo was delivered to the Gliwice Inland Port by 105 trains, and the total number of loaded wagons amounted to 3834 units.

Director Goc mentioned that the supply of coal from the Gliwice mine to the Wroclaw heat plant is an intermodal logistics chain using two branches of transport: rail and inland waterways. The OT Logistics is responsible for organizing the transport route, with several subcontractors involved in the process.

This year’s sailing season on the Odra was very successful. Thanks to the cooperation with the Silesian Logistics Centre and our partners, we increased the volume of transhipments by 63 percent year to year – up to 207,000 tons. We are particularly pleased that regular freight transports have returned to the Odra River and Gliwice Canal – said Andrzej Klimek, vice president of OT Logistics.

Robert Goc, Director of SCL assures us that bulk cargo handling capacities are much higher than the 207,000  tons of coal and reach about 1 million tons per year. “We are gradually modernising harbor cranes and our infrastructure. We are also ready to invest in new reloading equipment, if necessary”.
