The reconstruction tasks that were carried out at the Gliwice Port railway station from August 2017 to December 2018 significantly improved the conditions of cargo transport. After the reconstruction, a new functional track system was created with the possibility of smooth entry and exit from the existing sidings. The capacity of the station and the scope of servicing freight warehouses were increased. Currently, trains of a length up to 750 meters can be served at the station. A better service for the Silesian Logistics Centre has been provided, which will significantly affect the transport of goods by the Gliwice Canal and Odra.
Gliwice Port station operates the inland port that is considered the most modern in Poland. It is also the main train arriving point for Silesian Logistics Centre. The PLK S.A. project allowed for a complete reconstruction of the track system and connecting it with the access routes to the sidings, so that the warehouses have better access to the place of transhipment for both road and river transport.
PKP Polish Railway Lines S.A. rebuilts the station comprehensively. Almost 9 kilometers of new tracks have been laid, as well as 16 turnouts with electric heating, which prevents the equipment from freezing in winter. The renovation covered the tracks connecting the Gliwice Port station with the Gliwice – KÄ™dzierzyn Koźle route. As part of the investment, the traction network was replaced. The station area also gained new lighting.
New computer-operated rail traffic control devices were installed in the reconstructed control room. Newly installed equipment will greatly facilitate the work of traffic dispatchers. The devices will also increase the level of safety in rail traffic.
The cost of investment “Reconstruction of the Gliwice Port station with adjustment of tracks to a length of at least 800 meters” reached over 32 million PLN. It was financed from budgetary funds.
